The One Fact

A daily fact from Tolkien's Legendarium

Two Quenya -ina suffixes

In Quenya, the suffix -ina has two distinct functions: Tolkien noted it once as an aorist ending in a marginal note, but with no examples, while it is much better attested as an adjectival suffix. In that adjectival sense it appears in words like calina (“illuminated”, “sunny, light”), raina (“smiling, gracious, sweet-faced”), and even the name Elerrína, meaning “Crowned of Stars”.
